On November 1st, 2018, we woke up to find that something had pulled a bird feeder out of the tree immediately behind our home in Purcellville, Virgina. The bird feeder was hung about 7 feet in the air, we assumed perhaps a raccoon or possum had gotten on the bird feeder snapping the cord and letting it fall to the ground. Two empty suet cake trays had been licked clean. Something had found a delicious treat on Halloween night.
The next day, Steve went back through the footage to see if our Nest home security camera would show what had gotten to the bird feeder. He was stunned to see this video, which shows a large (perhaps 250 – 350 lbs), adult black bear had actually come over their fence and up on the deck. The time stamp showed that this was going on while we were home. Neither us nor our dogs noticed the large intruder padding across the back deck.
Steve quickly removed the fresh suet cakes that had been hung to replace those eaten by the bear on Halloween night. We’re being much more careful about leaving anything that might attract the bear outside.
Be careful. Although this is a gorgeous animal that is unlikely to attack people or pets, it is a large and potentially dangerous wild animal if surprised or cornered. Since we shared the video on Facebook, other neighbors have reported coyote sightings in our neighborhood as well.
Loudoun County and Purcellville are growing fast. But there’s still a lot of wildlife out there. Be careful!
Here are some pictures Steve took to show the relative size of the bear. Steve is 5’7″ tall and weights about 185 lbs. The bear appears to be two or three times his size.
